For many, diet represents more than just nutrition; it is interwoven with memories, identity, and personal growth. Recently, I celebrated my "10 year beef-iversary"— a decade since I stepped back into the world of red meat after years of various dietary explorations.
Growing up, I became a vegetarian at the tender age of eight after reading about celebrity lifestyles, specifically Jonathan Taylor Thomas. My young heart was convinced I needed to mirror his vegetarianism. Despite my parents' attempts to sway me otherwise, I was resolute.
Fleeting Meat-Free Years: What Changed?
Fast forward through high school, college, and a series of dietary adaptations—pescatarian, vegetarian, and even vegan at one point. I genuinely enjoyed my plant-based phase, culminating in my attendance at a raw vegan culinary school, where I honed my love for creative plant-based dishes.
However, not all cravings are easily IGNORED. During my second pregnancy, a sudden yearning for steak hit me like a freight train. I remember joyfully requesting my husband, the Pilot, to fire up the grill. The moment he handed me that perfectly cooked steak was nothing short of euphoric; I devoured it entirely. My acupuncturist humorously noted, "You need to eat flesh and blood to make flesh and blood"—an oddly primal yet relatable perspective.
Embracing Quality Over Quantity
Since reintroducing meat into my diet, I’ve discovered valuable lessons about the quality of what we consume. While protein is essential, I maintain that fiber and micronutrients are vital for health. Today, I consume beef multiple times a week, embracing quality over sheer quantity in my dietary choices.
