This week, students at the Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg have swapped out their traditional teachers for a unique set of instructors: the Tampa Bay Rays. Through the team's ongoing Science of Baseball program, now in its fourth year, over 100 middle school students are learning the essential connection between sports and academic subjects, particularly through STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math).

In a recent session, participants dived into mathematics by calculating statistics such as a hitter’s on-base percentage and a pitcher’s strikeout-to-walk ratio. Isha Rahman, the Rays' baseball operations coordinator, noted, "It's amazing for students to see how math applies in ways they might not have anticipated." The hands-on activities provided a thrilling glimpse into application-based learning, helping students connect their classroom knowledge with the real world.
